No Filipino transgender would be imprisoned over Thailand brawl; DFA says they'll be deported, fined instead

The Filipino transgenders involved in a brawl in Thailand would not be imprisoned but would instead pay fines and be deported, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega said on Thursday, March 7.

Speaking on TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview, the official also disclosed that the brawl involving two groups of transgenders of Filipino and Thai descent prompted other Filipino transgenders to come home to the Philippines.

“Ang gagawin na lang, ipapabayad na lang ng piyansa or fine 'yung mga assailants, 'yung mga Filipino transgender. Dalawa silang kinakasuhan, pay fine tapos i-deport na lang (What will happen is the assailants, the Filipino transgenders will be asked to pay bail or a fine. They were both charged, they will pay a fine and will be deported),” he said.

“‘Yung ibang mga Pilipinong transgender na nasa Bangkok ay nagsisi-uwian na kasi mainit eh. Kasi binabantaan sila ng mga Thai transgenders (The other Filipino transgenders in Bangkok have gone home because they were being threatened by Thai transgenders),” he added.

De Vega acknowledged that there has been tensions between the two groups, but the incident at Bangkok’s red light district on March 4 exacerbated the situation.

The official then asked Filipinos abroad to heed local laws and to avoid getting into fights with the locals.

“Nananawagan tayo sa ating mga kababayan, pag nasa abroad tayo, huwag makipag-away sa mga locals kasi teritoryo nila 'yun (We call on our countrymen, when you are abroad not to fight with the locals because that is their territory),” he said.

“Pero importante na 'yung magandang pangalan ng Filipinos sa ibat-ibang bansa ay ma-maintain natin (It is important to maintain our good name as Filipinos in different countries),” the official added as he assured that the Philippine embassy is ready to help Filipinos.

He reminded Filipinos to be “good guests” and to befriend the Thais since Thailand is also a co-member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Based on local reports and social media posts, three Filipino transgenders were involved in the brawl and were investigated by the Thai police for assault and battery.

A fourth Filipino transgender was also attacked by the Thai transgenders although she was not part of the altercation.
