Two Filipino seamen killed, three others injured in Houthi missile attack

Two Filipino seafarers were killed while three others were seriously injured after Houthi rebels attacked their ship in the waters off Yemen.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), 13 more Filipinos, who were also crew of civilian bulk carrier True Confidence, were brought by the Indian Navy, who responded to the incident, to Djibouti.

The Philippine Embassy in Egypt already dispatched a team bound for Djibouti to provide them with necessary assistance, the DFA said.

"The Philippine Government remains steadfast in the belief that through diplomacy and adherence to international law, the inter-related conflicts affecting the region at present will eventually be resolved," DFA said in a statement.

It added that would lead "to the resumption of free and unimpeded commerce for the world economy and freedom of navigation for the international community."

Houthi rebels had launched various attacks on seafarers to express their sympathy with the people of Gaza being killed by the Israeli government.

In November 2023, 17 Filipino seafarers were held hostage in the Red Sea as Houthi believed their ship was being operated by an Israeli company.
