Two consecutive earthquakes struck Davao Oriental early Thursday morning, March 7, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs recorded a 5.0-magnitude earthquake at 4:19 a.m. with an epicenter located 58 kilometers (km) northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental.
It said the tremor, which occurred at a depth of 17 kilometers, was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
The tremor, which was initially measured at magnitude 5.3, was “weak” at Intensity III in Lingig, Surigao del Sur, while it was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur and City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.
Meanwhile, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred at 5:39 a.m., which was also traced in Davao Oriental. It was initially recorded at 5.1-magnitude.

Phivolcs located its epicenter 70 km northeast of Baganga, and occurred at a depth of 14 km.
