What are the 5 common online crimes vs women and children? PNP-ACG reveals
The Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP-ACG) has revealed five common cybercrimes since the launching last year of a virtual helpline that caters to the complaints and concerns of women and children across the country.
Based on the PNP-ACG data, the top five complaints being received by the virtual helpline were cyber libel, sextortion, debt collection harassment, online data hacking, and internet crimes against children.
At least 20 percent of complaints received relating to women and children are related to cyberlibel, followed closely by sextortion with 19 percent.
Sextortion is a modus wherein a person would blackmail former partners and other netizens using nude and other private photos in exchange for sexual favors.
Most of the successful operations of the PNP-ACG were related to sextortion.
Debt collection harassment comes third with 17 percent, wherein one of the modus operandi is that some loan sharks would humiliate those who are unable to settle their debts by sending messages to their friends and relatives on social media.
Online data hacking comes fourth with 12 percent followed by internet crimes against children with eight percent.
The protection of women and children against cybercrimes, according to PNP-ACG director Maj. Gen. Sidney Hernia, was the reason behind the creation of the ‘AlengPulis with the Cybersquad’ program which was launched by the Women and Children Cybercrime Protection Unit (WCCPU) last year.
He said the virtual helpline features an online caricature of a female police officer that will address issues related to women and children's safety, protection, and empowerment.
“AlengPulis aims to provide assistance and guidance to individuals experiencing abuse, exploitation, or harassment, particularly in the online space. It utilizes various channels, including social media platforms, to reach out to and support those in need,” said Hernia.
Hernia narrated that one of the celebrated cases solved by the project was the arrest of a fake dentist who was targeting minors by offering dental services, particularly braces, in exchange for sexual favors.
“If you are a victim of abuse, calling AlengPulis can be your first step towards seeking help and support. Reaching out for help is a courageous step towards reclaiming your safety and well-being. You deserve to live a life free from abuse,” said Hernia.
Hernia stressed that the AlengPulis program strictly adheres to PNP policies, prioritizing victim's protection and ensuring their privacy in a safe environment.
