'Nakakahiya': NAIA should tap pest control vs rats, bed bugs--Tulfo

House Deputy Majority Leader ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo has admitted that the issue of pests at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is "embarrassing". 

Luckily, the solution to the problem is a simple and obvious one: pest control. 

“Palagay ko ho may problema ho iyong sa NAIA management. Simple lang ho solusyon diyan eh, meron naman tayong mga pest control di ho ba? Palinisan naman yung mga upuan. Mukhang napapansin ko ho marami ang janitor doon pero wala hong pest control,” Tulfo said in a press briefing Tuesday, March 5. 

(I think the problem is with the NAIA management. The solution there is simple, we have pest control right? The chairs mist be cleaned. I noticed that there are many janitors there, but no pest control personnel.) 

“Iba ho ang trabaho ng pest control sa janitor (A janitor's job is different from pest control)," he noted. 

Reports of "surot" or bed bug incidents and videos of rat sightings within NAIA's terminal have been making rounds in social media as of late. 

Tulfo pointed out that the NAIA facilities are already old, thus airport management should also look at carrying out renovations for the sake of the country’s reputation to foreign tourists. 

“Saka lumang-luma na po ang building na iyan. Kailangan na po talagang magkaroon tayo nang mga ganyan klaseng maintenance. Nakakahiya na kasi. Yan po ay international airport, may mga turista tayo diyan, nakakahiya po,” he explained. 

(That building is very old. We really need to implement that kind of maintenance. Because it's embarrassing. That's an international airport, there are tourists there, it's embarrassing.) 

“Siguro talagang napabayaan lang ng NAIA management. Ewan ko kung gusto nilang magtipid...Sana nag-hire na lang sila [ng pest control] and I think that is what they are doing now,” Tulfo further commented. 

(I think it was just neglected by the NAIA management. I don't know, maybe they're trying to save money...they should have just hired pest control.) 

NAIA, the country’s main gateway, is operated by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA)
