Good news!
On Friday, March, 8, the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will offer free rides to female passengers in celebration of National Women’s Month.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) announced that female passengers can ride the LRT-2 line for free from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera said the free ride for women is LRTA's expression of thanks and respect for women's success, talent, and community contributions.
"Ito pong libreng sakay natin para sa mga kababaihan ay pasasalamat ng LRTA sa kanilang hindi matatawarang kontribusyon sa ating lipunan. Sana po sa simpleng paraan po namin ay maramdaman ninyo na mahalag kayo samin (This free trip is the LRTA's way of honoring women for their unforgivable contributions to our society. I hope that our modest method makes you feel important to us)," he said.
The LRTA, through its Gender and Development Committee, ensures the provision of gender-responsive rail services to the riding public through its projects, programs, and services, such as holding trainings aimed at increasing awareness of women employees' rights.
On the other hand, the MRT-3 has also announced that free rides will be offered to female passengers on the same day, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Transportation Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT-3 Officer-in-Charge Jorjette B. Aquino said the free ride for women is intended to convey gratitude and recognition for women's vital roles in society.
"Sa MRT-3 pa lamang po, nariyan ang mga ticket sellers, security personnel, station supervisors, at iba pa pong kawaning babae na araw-araw nagtitiyak ng maayos at ligtas na biyahe ng mga pasahero. Nararapat lamang po na ating pagpugayan at suportahan ang ating mga kababaihan lalo't higit sa kanilang espesyal na araw (Every day, ticket sellers, security workers, station managers, and other female staff guarantee that passengers have a smooth and safe travel on MRT-3. It is appropriate that we respect and support our ladies, especially on this special day)," she said.
With the theme, “Invest in women: Accelerate progress," the National Women’s Month will be celebrated for the entire month of March to showcase women's victories and achievements, to monitor progress toward gender equality, and to continually promote women's empowerment.
