Hontiveros urges Malacañang to expedite reso raising WPS issues to UNGA
Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday, March 6 urged Malacañang to fast track the filing of a resolution to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that calls on China to stop the harassment of Filipinos in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Hontiveros’ statement comes after four Philippine Navy personnel were injured due to China Coast Guard’s firing of water cannons at Unaizah May, a PH resupply boat, en route to Ayungin Shoal.
“Sumosobra na ang Tsina. Pati hukbong dagat natin, sinaktan na (China is going too far, even our Navy has been hurt). At what point can we consider this to be unlawful aggression, as understood under international law? Raising this issue to the UN organ may be a way to give Chinese vessels pause before they attack our citizens. Umaksyon na tayo bago pa mahuli ang lahat (Let’s do something before it becomes too late),” Hontiveros pointed out.
Hontiveros and Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri earlier filed Proposed Senate Resolution 718, which implored the Executive, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), to exhaust all diplomatic means to stop China’s illegal activities in the WPS.
The resolution also cited the need for the Philippine government to consolidate multilateral support for the enforcement of the 2016 Arbitral Award which upholds the Philippines rights to the West Philippine Sea.
“I trust in our diplomats’ will and capacity to take on this colossal task. The international community is already on our side, which is the side of truth,” she said.
Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito also slammed China’s delusion that the WPS belongs to them “must be put to an end.”
“The Philippines firmly upholds the peaceful resolution of disputes through adherence to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). However, China's actions often deviate from these principles,” Ejercito said, in a separate statement.
“I commend our Philippine Coast Guard for their professionalism and bravery in the face of danger.
I am calling once more on the national government to expedite the modernization of our armed forces—to strengthen our defense posture, protect our maritime interests, and ensure the safety of our people,” he stressed.
