Philippines to attract more Korean students if education undergoes liberalization via Cha-cha, says official

Not only will economic Charter change (Cha-cha) attract more foreign investors to the Philippines; it will also attract more foreign students, particularly Koreans.

Thus, said Korean Chamber of Commerce-Philippines (KCCP) President Hyun Chong Un, who participated on the fifth day of House Committee of the Whole discussions on Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No.7 as a resource person. 

Hyun told the committee that the chamber welcomes the planned liberalization of Philippine education, which was among the sought constitutional tweaks of RBH No.7. 

He said that the envisioned presence of more foreign schools operating in the country would surely lead to a bigger influx of Korean students and other foreign nationalities. 

“It will make Philippine education more competitive. It will benefit the Philippines,” he said.

According to Hyun, some 50,000 Koreans are currently enrolled in local schools. He notes that his compatriots are particularly interested in learning English. 

The KCCP head also told the Committee of the Whole House that his group shares the stand of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in supporting the proposed economic constitutional amendments. 

The Philippines only allows 40 percent foreign ownership in the education sector under the 1987 Constitution.
