Help Filipinos realize their dream of owning their homes

Owning a home is a dream everyone aspires for—the rich or the poor. Yet, in the Philippines this dream of owning a home remains elusive to many. But there's hope for homeless Filipinos.


The government, through the Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF), is trying to bridge the housing gap.


Just recently, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on the HDMF, commonly known as the Pag-IBIG Fund, to make home loans more accessible to Filipinos.


“I urge the Pag-IBIG Fund to make its home mortgage financing even more accessible and to balance this with sustainability,” President Marcos said in his speech on the Pag-IBIG Fund Chairman's Report on Feb. 27, 2024.


The President's call is a welcome development as it is certain to provide hope and a bright future to many homeless Filipinos around the country.


While Pag-IBIG Fund reported a staggering ₱126.04 billion in housing loans that benefited over 96,000 members in 2023, the President wants more.


With its current assets of ₱925.61 billion and its ability to disburse the highest member dividends amounting to ₱48.76 billion in 2023, Pag-IBIG appears financially stable and ready to provide more housing loans that will enable its members to have a home they can call their own.


But addressing the housing backlog is not all about the government opening financial windows through affordable loans. As President Marcos emphasized, this must be balanced with sustainability—making settlements inclusive, greener, smarter, safe, and resilient.


Sustainable housing is not just about structures; it’s about building communities and fulfilling dreams. Necessities and livelihood opportunities should be accessible.


As a former US congresswoman once said, “Public housing is more than just a place to live, public housing programs should provide opportunities to residents and their families.”
Owning a dream home will be realized if everyone contributes his or her share.


Apart from Pag-IBIG, it is necessary for other government agencies to play their respective roles in helping Filipinos realize their dream home.


Congress, for instance, should continue enacting laws on housing policies, including incentives to the private developers to build affordable homes, and streamline bureaucratic processes. Red tape must be cut.


Government should also educate Filipinos about housing options, financial literacy, and responsible homeownership. Community-driven initiatives can empower citizens to pursue and fulfill their dreams of having their own homes.


Everyone should rally behind government efforts in breaking down barriers and unlocking the doors to opportunities in owning a home.
