The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has assured that there will be an ample supply of fish available just in time for the Lenten season.
With the holy week fast approaching this month, BFAR chief information officer Nazzer Briguera assured increased loadings from fish ports which equals an increased volume being sold in the market.
“It’s the peak season for fishing. So we expect sufficient supply [to be delivered] in the wet markets,” Briguera told Manila Bulletin.
Briguera also addressed the concern about possible price increases, stating that fish prices have lowered as early as this month.
“[For now], the price of galunggong per kilo went down to around 60 to 70 pesos,” he added.
The current retail price for bangus ranges from P150 to P220 per kilo depending on the size, while tilapia is sold at P120 to P160 per kilo.
Tuna, on the other hand, has a slightly pricier value at P200 to P260 per kilo.
“We expect that there will be a slight increase in the price. The important thing is we have enough supply,” BFAR official said.
The holy week, which falls on the last week of March, will garner a larger demand for seafood from Filipino Catholics. The bureau assured that this summer has contributed to increased fish productivity.
“Fishing days are increased during the summer because the seas are calmer. [This means] there’s more opportunity and increased productivity.”
