REFLECTIONS TODAY

What does it take to forgive?
In the Gospel, Peter asks how many times he must forgive his brother who sins against him.
He thinks he is being generous when he proposes his answer: seven times. After all, that is the perfect number.
Jesus suggests something more: seventy-seven times! (v 22). He is really saying that no definite number would make forgiveness perfect.
Jesus then narrates a parable about a king who in his mercy cancels the debt of his servant who owes him a large sum.
Ironically, this servant who is forgiven does not show the same mercy to another: he does not cancel the debt of a fellow servant who owes him a mere fraction of what he owed the king.
At the end of the parable we see the king punishing the servant who could not forgive the debt of his fellow servant.
What Jesus narrates is a lesson of empathy—and forgiving our brothers and sisters from our hearts!
