House Speaker Martin Romualdez will summon soon the officials of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) to make them explain why vehicles' RFIDs could not be read at the toll gates, which resulted to a traffic jam last Holy Wednesday.
This was bared in a statement Sunday, March 31 by ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo, the deputy majority leader for communications.
"Ang daming nagalit at nagsumbong kay Speaker Romualdez na hindi binabasa yung RFID sticker nila pagdaan sa toll plaza na naging dahilan ng napakahabang traffic sa NLEX noong araw na iyon," he said.
(A lot of angry motorists complained to Speaker Romualdez about their RFID stickers not being read at the toll plaza, which resulted to a long queue on NLEX that day.)
“Ano pa raw ang silbi ng RFID kung hihingin din naman daw yun card nila sa toll booth," Tulfo added.
(He asks what's the purpose of the RFID if they still need to give their card to the toll booth.)
RFID stands for radio frequency identification. It facilitates the swift and steady passage of vehicles at toll gates.
The broadcaster-turned-lawmaker also said that officials of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and Toll Regulatory Board would be summoned to the House of Representatives.
He said this would allow Romualdez to know first hand their response to the toll gate woes.
“Now if they can’t fix it, siguro (maybe) Congress can start reviewing their franchises upon the instruction of the Speaker, of course…at baka may iba dyan na kayang gawan ng paraan ang problema na yan (maybe there are other entities that can fix the problem),” Tulfo said.
Tulfo raised the possibility that the RFID readers being used are of low quality.
