As the sun slowly descends toward the horizon, a warm golden glow is cast upon the sand. A profound sense of tranquility envelops everything. The chatter of the crowd blends harmoniously with the whispers of the salty breeze, creating a soothing hymn that permeates the air.
Wings outstretched, seabirds soar majestically against the backdrop of orange and pink hues painted across the sky. Their playful cries mingle with the rhythmic sound of crashing waves, enhancing the song of nature.
Surfers and their silhouettes gracefully slice through the water as if dancing along the rhythmic embrace of each tide.
By the shore, families and friends gather to witness the breathtaking spectacle unfolding before them. They sit on blankets and lounge chairs, faces turned to the vista as they soak in the last rays of daylight.
This scene marked the climax of my Holy Week, having spent the period of devotion and contemplation by the ocean at Alpas La Union. The retreat, which serves as a resort, coffee shop, plant studio, pawikan and avian reserve all at once, is a passion project by Champ Lui Pio, the renowned vocalist of Hale.
It is the perfect setting for prayer and reflection.
As the popularity of San Juan's bustling beach and surf scene in La Union continues to rise, so does the desire for a quieter alternative. Enter Bacnotan, a neighboring coastal town offering a peaceful escape for beach and surf enthusiasts seeking a more laid-back experience.
The municipality boasts a charming coastline that promises longer rides on sandy breaks and a retreat from the hustle and bustle. Just a short 20-minute drive from San Juan, Bacnotan's surf spot beckons those in search of a calmer surfing option.
Alpas La Union, the hidden gem of Bacnotan, is nestled at the heart of Barangay Pandan. This is Champ’s second resort under the same name, with the first located in Siargao in the Visayas region.
Despite its relative obscurity, this travel destination beckons with a captivating ambiance that mesmerizes visitors as soon as they arrive.
With a spacious outdoor area and a breathtaking view of the coast, Alpas is a fantastic venue to unwind and soak in the natural boon of Bacnotan.
Champ normally uses the place to relax, meditate and build his relationship with nature and the Creator. Alpas La Union, for the musician, acts as a solace to escape the unforgiving and busy Manila life.
During the Holy Week, I was a proud witness of the signing of the Memorandum of Declaration between Bacnotan Mayor Divine Fontanilla, Vice Mayor Francisco Fontanilla, and the Alpas owner, Champ. To cut it short, the document proclaims Alpas La Union as a protected bird sanctuary.
This detail sets the resort apart from its competitors. Its commitment to providing pet-friendly lodging makes Alpas La Union ideal for travelers with furry companions. For the most part, as we face a climate crisis, this eco-friendly enterprise is all the more impactful in the country.
As a tourist spot, it supports the Philippine economy, while incorporating sustainable practices into its operations. All of the trees within the vicinity remain intact, a testament to Champ’s advocacy of ecological conservation. The presence of numerous trees creates a naturally cool atmosphere in the area.
Alpas La Union is likewise a haven for the avian species amidst the loss of natural habitats due to deforestation and urbanization. By offering sanctuary to birds like the Kingfisher, the establishment contributes to the preservation of biodiversity, ensuring that these vital components of our ecosystem endure. Also, within the facility is a Pawikan hatchery, called the Alpas Culma, which helps protect the endangered species.
Another promising aspect is the way Alpas La Union presents a unique opportunity for visitors to be educated on the importance of environmental conservation. It directly builds resilience against the negative implications of climate emergency as well. Embodying the principles of environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism, Alpas balances the needs of both humans and nature exemplifying the potential for tourism to be a force for positive change.
In addition to everything else, the beds, equipped with Tempur orthopedic mattresses, offer pure bliss for a restful sleep. The service is top-notch, and the locals are incredibly kind and accommodating.
During my stay, it felt as though time had stood still. I departed from the resort with fond memories and the image of the beautiful seascape forever etched in my mind. As the stars twinkled overhead, Hale took to the stage to perform. With the enchantment of the beach, both the moment and the place served as a poignant reminder of life's simple joys and the breathtaking splendor of our natural world.
Retreats like Alpas La Union serve as oases of calm, prompting us to slow down, take a deep breath, and revel in the wonders that surround us.
There’s hope!
