LTO braces for return of millions of Pinoys from Holy Week break

Regional directors and other officials of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) were directed to maintain the road safety measures in their respective areas in anticipation of the return of millions of Filipino travelers to their workplaces in Metro Manila and other urban areas after the long Lenten break.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II said he had already instructed the agency officials down to the District Offices to observe the road safety measures that include passenger buses inspections before they are allowed to leave bus terminals.

He said the presence of LTO enforcers must also be maintained starting Sunday, March 31, when the return of Filipino travelers is expected to begin.

“We are expecting the start of the land travel of some of our kababayan on Sunday, March 31, so my instruction is to implement the same road safety measures before the Holy Week exodus,” said Mendoza.

The LTO is among the government agencies that were tapped to ensure safe travel for the Holy Week break, among the measures are visibility on major roads and road assistance desks and terminal inspections that include conduct of surprise drug test for both drivers and conductors.

Mendoza said an information drive for road safety was also ordered to be strengthened to raise awareness among the motorists on the basic safety measures before a long drive. 

Mendoza particularly advised motorists to refrain from road rage amid the expected massive traffic build-up in the entry points of Metro Manila and other urban areas.

On the part of the Philippine National Police, the 52,000 uniformed personnel were advised to remain in their posts to assist in the road security and safety of travelers.

Police forces across the country are currently on heightened alert status.

More than two million passengers were expected to troop to various ports across the country for the entire duration of the Holy Week and all leaves of absence of personnel of Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to ensure sufficient manpower until the return of travelers to their homes and workplaces.

Security measures in airports also remain tight for the return of thousands of air passengers through domestic and international flights.
