The Facebook account of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was confirmed to have been compromised again after it made unusual posts on Good Friday, March 29, marking the fourth time that the social media accounts and website of the agency were targeted by a cyberattack within the past three months.

The PCG Facebook account, which is followed by 988,000 social media users, posted clips of a foreign film around noontime.

Three hours later, it shared another clip of a foreign movie originating from a Facebook page of a photography and videography company, which also seemed to be hacked.

PCG spokesperson Rear Adm. Armando Balilo said an unknown entity gained access to the account around 12:30 p.m.

He said the Coast Guard Public Affairs Service (CGPAS) monitored two malicious short videos posted and shared on the page.

"The CGPAS is now coordinating with the Cybercrime Investigative and Coordinating Cetner (CICC) under the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to conduct backend operations and assess the security breach," Balilo said.

Just last February 26, the same Facebook account of the PCG was hacked by an unknown entity.

The account was recovered three days later with the help of experts from the CICC-DICT.

Backend operations led to the discovery and removal of three hackers identified only as Fatima Hasan, Murat Kansu, and Vicky Bates.

The real identities of the hackers were not known but they utilized a malware to breach the Facebook page's security.

The X (formerly Twitter) account of the PCG -- with 80,000 followers -- was also hacked by an unknown entity on Feb. 15. It was retrieved by the PCG on the same day.

The website of the PCG’s National Coast Watch System (NCWS), along with other government sites, was also targeted by hackers based in China sometime in January but DICT experts thwarted them.

The PCG earlier refused to link the hacking of their accounts to the tension in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
