The Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP), the country’s premier organization for business reporters, recently held an oath-taking ceremony for the 2024 board of directors led by its new president, Neil Jerome Morales of Thomson Reuters.
Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Ralph G. Recto inducted the 11 EJAP officers on March 21, at the DOF's head office in Manila.
Morales, who is no stranger to the EJAP board having served previously as secretary, treasurer, and vice president, announced various projects lined up for this year for the enrichment of EJAP members – both regular and associate – including a project with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, and other forums on infrastructure, aviation, mobility and automotive, renewable energy. and sustainability.
He also intends to conduct more seminars to engage journalism students and to nurture and encourage the next crop of business reporters.
EJAP already has an existing journalism program with the University of Santo Tomas since before the pandemic. In the past, the group had training programs with the University of the Philippines, the Asian Institute of Management and the former Center for Research and Communication which is now the University of Asia and the Pacific.
“Beyond our daily grind, we need to secure our pipeline of business journalists. We intend to work with schools to showcase business journalism and the opportunities for aspiring journalists,” said Morales.

Within the 39-year old organization itself, Morales will be the first EJAP president that has committed to ensure that “future leaders will be prepared for service” beyond his term. This entails training programs to mold the next EJAP leaders.
Meanwhile, Recto told EJAP members especially those who cover the DOF beat to "call us out if we are wrong" but "on times we have done something good, write about our wins — just the facts, no add-on praises needed."
He also said that as DOF chief, he has "deposited my political habits at the (DOF building) door, foremost of which is my reluctance to engage the press, face-to-face, regularly."
"Fairness is all I ask, nothing more, nothing less," said Recto, an ex-politician.
The new EJAP board, besides Morales, include Kris Crismundo of Philippine News Agency as vice president-internal; Michelle Ong of ANC Market Edge as vice president-external; Maria Bernadette Romero of Daily Tribune as secretary; Lorenz Marasigan of BusinessMirror as treasurer; and Louise Maureen Simeon of Philippine Star as auditor. The board members are: Jenniffer Austria of Manila Standard; Elijah Felice Rosales of Philippine Star; Alena Mae Flores of Manila Standard; Lawrence Agcaoili of Philippine Star; and Jimmy Calapati of Malaya Business Insight.
