Devotees troop to Tanay churches for Good Friday traditions

Catholic devotees meditated on the passion and death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday in two of the upland villages in Tanay, Rizal.

In Barangay Sampaloc, the site of the Diocesan Shrine and Saint Jude Thaddeus Parish, church goers listened to the speakers during the services from the commemoration of the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ commonly known as the “Siete Palabras” to the veneration of the Cross to the procession.

During the Seven Last Words church service, speakers were members of the community who shared insights and testimonies on how their life was changed by their Christian devotion.

Tourists arrived in the parish compound in time for the after church services that included a novena to the Divine Mercy at 3 p.m.; a passion play about the agony of Jesus; the veneration of the Holy Cross with the church goers kissing or wiping with their handkerchief of the foot of the cross; and followed by the procession of the religious image of the characters present during the time of the passion and death of Christ.

In Barangay San Andres, Tanay, some led the “Pabasa” or the recitation or chanting of the “Pasyong Mahal,” an epic narrative of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ while others attended religious activities in the nearby community chapel.

The image of the Jesus of Nazareth carrying the cross and the Santo Entierro or the image of the dead Christ were among the religious images that were part of the Good Friday procession in Barangay Sampaloc.
