30 years of connectivity: DICT commemorates internet's milestone anniversary in the Philippines

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) on Friday, March 29, commemorated a significant milestone: 30 years of internet connectivity in the country.

“On the 30th anniversary of the Internet in the Philippines, let us look back at the progress that this transformative technology has brought to our lives and has allowed Filipinos to reap the benefits of the digital economy,” DICT said in a Facebook post.

DICT paid tribute to Benjamin Tan who established the Philippines’ first connection to the Internet at a network center in Makati City.

Tan, DICT said, was an engineer who worked “almost single-handedly on the background to make the country’s first Internet connection happen” on March 29, 1994.

“As we embark on shaping a Bagong Pilipinas, we urge everyone to join us in co-creating a Bayang Digital paved by the Internet, one where we harness connectivity and frontier technologies to enable a citizen-centric government, bridge the digital divide, and empower Filipinos online,” DICT said.
