LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – Two tons of tilapia (Saint Peter’s fish) died in a fish kill in Barangay Metro Gabu here recently.

TILAPIA
Engr. Shiela Opelac, head of the city agricultural office here, said the fish kill affected at least 200 fish cage operators.
Opelac blamed the incident on sea water at the mouth of the Padsan River and hot weather.
She said the tilapia grown in Barangay Metro Gabu were susceptible to salty water.
The city government has provided assistance to affected fish cage operators under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation.
She advised the fish cage operators to grow tilapia and other fish species that can tolerate a wide range of water salinity.
