Philippine Red Cross to deploy 2,000 volunteers for Holy Week
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) said on Wednesday, March 27, that the organization is prepared to ensure the safety and well-being of the public during Holy Week by deploying at least 2,000 volunteers nationwide.

In a statement, PRC announced its plan to set up more than 200 first-aid stations, ambulance units, and roving teams across strategic locations nationwide.
These include seaports, airports, major highways, bus terminals, and places of worship until March 31.
"Every year, we anticipate religious mass gatherings, and that is why we are prepared even a month before the actual observance of Holy Week," PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon said.
He highlighted the importance of intensified preparations for medical emergency response for the week, as many Filipinos travel to visit family in their home provinces.
"That is part of our mantra: Always First, Always Ready, and Always There. Our welfare desks are put up in strategic areas to accommodate inquiries and concerns. Along with other assets and foot patrol teams, these will all be operational for the entire holy week," Gordon added.
He said the PRC will also offer a variety of services, including first-aid assistance, help for those who are separated from companions or relatives, referral services, and psychosocial support.
Road safety tips
To promote road safety during the holidays, the PRC also released several reminders.
The organization asked travelers not to drink and drive.
It said that driving under the influence of alcohol is a punishable offense under the law and should never be practiced, no matter the circumstances.
Meanwhile, the PRC pointed out that people should only drive while energized and energized not when tired and sleepy.
"Driving while drowsy can impair your reaction time and decision-making abilities, increasing the risk of accidents on the road," it said.
PRC said it is advised to plan one’s route in advance before driving.
"You are not only ensuring a smoother driving experience but also proactively taking steps to enhance your safety," the humanitarian organization said.
PRC said checking the condition of vehicles is an "effective measure" to prevent mishaps that may occur while on the road without anyone.
It cited information from the World Health Organization (WHO) saying that the use of helmets while driving reduces the risk of fatalities by 40 percent.
It added that this safety measure protects the individual and contributes to a safer environment for everyone on the road.
Meanwhile, carrying a first aid kit, knowing emergency contacts, staying informed about the weather and driving conditions, and preparing for minor emergencies is a "must."
The organization added that installing the IFRC could "save a life."
PRC explained that the free app provides easy-to-follow instructions for handling everyday first-aid situations, where access to the information and knowing how to handle the most common first-aid emergencies is essential.
