Poe urges motorcycle taxi TWG to finish pilot study amid calls for expansion

Senator Grace Poe said on Tuesday, March 26, that the technical working group (TWG) studying the concept of motorcycle taxi should finish and submit its pilot study amid calls for its expansion.

"Expanding the program to other locations and new players needs efficient planning and traffic assessment. Kailangang maipakita ng TWG na talagang pinag-aralan ang magiging epekto nito sa parehong commuters at service providers (The TWG needs to show that it has really studied its effect to both the commuters and service providers)," Poe said.

The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Services stated that Congress also needs the TWG's study to ensure that regulations will respond to the needs of the transport sector.

"Before we allow the full rollout of MC Taxi operations, we need to ensure that we have the proper safety, security, and regulatory requirements in place," she added.

Recently, several transportation coalition groups and tricycle operators urged President Marcos to stop the plan to allow more motorcycle taxis in Metro Manila, saying this would adversely affect the already meager income of existing operators and riders.

The appeal came amid the ongoing pilot study on the program, as well as the recent decision of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to include a big Transportation Network Vehicle Service in the motorcycle taxi pilot study.

Ariel Lim, president of the National Public Transport Coalition, National Confederation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (NACTODAP), said the LTFRB should finish its pilot study before accommodating more applicants.

Currently, there are only three companies that were given permits to participate in the motorcycle taxi study– Angkas, Joyride at Move It.
