Health advocate urges immediate facemask mandate amid pertussis outbreak

In response to the recent surge of pertussis cases in several regions, health reform advocate Dr. Anthony Leachon has called for the immediate reinstatement of mandatory facemask-wearing “without hesitation” in public places.

Speaking during an interview with ANC on Tuesday, March 26, Leachon said: “Because we don't have any protection right now for the kids and only for the outbreak areas and voluntary for those people who would like it.”

He highlighted the vulnerability of children to pertussis and underscored the role of adults, who often serve as carriers of the infection due to their increased mobility.

"The prevention of whooping cough is very important, especially for pregnant women, and it's crucial to cover our mouths as potential sources of infection," Leachon stressed.

Leachon pointed out that the mode of transmission for pertussis primarily involves “droplet infection” through direct contact, making facemasks an “essential barrier” against transmission.

"So these are important information that would support the wearing of the facemask and the insulation of the public minimum health standards," he highlighted.

Drawing parallels to pandemic hygiene protocols, he stressed the importance of handwashing.

"If you think that you have pertussis, because of the whooping cough, fatigue and the difficulty of breathing, vomiting and all then go to the center,” Leachon said.
