The city government said pertussis is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the Bordetella bacterium.
Pertussis is spread mainly through droplets from the mouth and nose when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks to another person. The illness is dangerous especially to babies, it said.
Among the symptoms of pertussis, it said, are dry cough followed by episodes of severe cough, mild fever, and cold. It said pertussis can be prevented through vaccination.
“Iniulat na sa Hunyo pa darating ang mga bakuna mula DOH. Gayun pa man, may mga mabisang antibiotics na nakagagamot sa sakit na ito (It was reported that the vaccine from DOH [Department of Health] will not arrive until June. Despite this, there are effective antibiotics that treat this illness),” the city government stated.
It advised those with pertussis symptoms to isolate and wear face mask to prevent spreading it to other people.
The city government said it is ready to respond to the spread of pertussis, saying its health personnel, health centers and hospital have the capability, medicine and equipment to treat pertussis.
It advised the public to call the following hotlines:
