After a couple of 30-point performances that went for naught, Ybañez’s efforts paid off this time as he fired 31 kills that went with two blocks to help the Golden Spikers sweep the Bulldogs in the eliminations.
In the first round, the España-based spikers snapped NU’s 34-game winning run.
The Golden Spikers were also so far the only team to defeat the Bulldogs this season.
“Masaya po ako kasi habang naglalaro syempre hindi ko kita yung score ko so as long as kaya kong magcontribute sa team sa kahit anong pamamaraan gagawin ko. Sobrang happy ako kasi I know it’s a collaborative effort hindi lang ako,” said Ybañez, who also logged 25 excellent receptions.
With the win, UST improved its stlate to 5-4 at joint fourth with Ateneo, with the Eagles ahead in the tiebreaker due to the “win over the other” rule.
Sherwin Umandal also shone for the Golden Spikers by chipping in 15 points while Gboy De Vega, who was in and out of the game, delivered 11 points and 14 receptions.
Jade Disquitado unloaded 20 points as the Bulldogs saw their seven-game winning run come to an end and slipped to 7-2 at solo second.
Earlier, Ateneo hung tough in the fifth set to turn back upset-seeking University of the Philippines, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-10.
Ken Batas erupted for a team-high 30 points on 27 attacks, two blocks, and an ace along on top of nine digs, while Jian Salarzon contributed 20points highlighted by four blocks.
Jaivee Malabanan scored 19 points in a losing effort for UP, which plummeted to its ninth straight defeat in as many outings.
