Magnitude-4.9 quake rocks Surigao del Sur


BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-4.9 earthquake hit Surigao del Sur on Sunday afternoon, March 24.

No injury or damage was reported in the earthquake, the Surigao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was recorded at 2:22 p.m. and its epicenter was 17 kilometers (kms) southeast of Marihatag.

The tectonic earthquake had a depth of only 27 kms.

It was felt at Intensity IV in Hinatuan town, including Marihatag, Intensity III in Bislig City, and Intensity II in Cagwait and Tagbina, Surigao del Sur.

Gov. Alexander Pimentel mobilized the PDRRMC to check residents, especially those in coastal areas.
