Student-athlete dies after being hit by soccer goal post in Laoag City

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – A 16-year-old student-athlete died after he was accidentally hit by a fallen soccer goal post at the oval ground of Northwestern University here on Friday, March 22.

Police said the victim, a Grade 12 student of Caaocan High School in this city and a resident of Barangay 60-A, Caaoacan, was training with other athletes and their coach Walter Corpuz Valdez, 46, in preparation for the upcoming Region 1 Athletic Association meet in this province.

While they were crossing the oval field, the victim, together with another athlete, ran and hung on to the goal post.

The goal post accidentally fell on the ground together with the victim.

The victim was hit in the head and taken to the hospital where he was declared dead due to a serious head injury.
