“Iloilo is also historically significant to the women's movement,” said Sen. Risa Hontiveros in a message on Friday, March 22, referring to Iloilo-born Purificacion "Pura" Villanueva Kalaw, who organized the Asociacion Feminista Ilongga in 1906 that started the campaign to allow women to vote and eventually advancing women’s rights through legislation in the country.
Hontiveros challenged more than 400 lady legislators in the summit to continue crafting laws to protect and empower Filipinas, especially those in the vulnerable sector.
Garin noted that hosting the summit showcases the growth of Iloilo.
"We want to showcase the 'Fun, Foodie, Friendly Iloilo' to the lady legislators and to let them see the beautiful places and compare how Iloilo developed as compared to 10 years ago," Garin said.
"This is an important gathering for us to talk with each other about our best practices in legislation or the good ordinances that could be replicated by other local government units (LGUs)," added Garin.
