Defending champion De La Salle continued its dominant display, ripping Far Eastern University, 25-19, 25-21, 25-18, for its fifth consecutive win in the second round of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday night, March 23, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Spikers, who have only won via a sweep or five-setter in the first round to claim the solo second lead, went the shorter route for the second time against the Lady Tamaraws and improved their record in the standings to 7-1.
Reigning Most Valuable Player Angel Canino led all scorers with 15 points highlighted by 14 kills in the brief affair.
Senior middle blocker Thea Gagate finished with 10 markers off six attacks, three blocks and a service ace, while sophomore setter Julia Coronel had 16 excellent sets that went with two kill block points.
The reigning champs will have a Holy Week break before they resume action on April 3 against University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.
Despite some occasional fightback from FEU, the Taft-based squad remained on top of things for most of the way and was quick to get back on its feet.
Meanwhile, Gerzel Petallo and Faida Bakanke led the way for FEU in the losing cause with 13 points apiece.
The Lady Tamaraws, who were coming off back-to-back victories, settled for an even 4-4 record in the fourth spot of the standings.
