China accuses Philippines of transporting construction materials to grounded ship

China said Saturday, March 23, that the Philippines was attempting to transport construction materials to its grounded ship in the West Philippine Sea, that was why the Chinese coast guard had to attack Filipino troops.

Gan Yu, spokesman for China’s Coast Guard (CCG), in a statement said the Philippines’ action was a “deliberate and provocative” move that supposedly infringed on China’s sovereignty and legitimate rights.

Referring to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)’s Saturday resupply mission, Yu said that the Philippine-contracted resupply vessel, Unaizah May 4, intruded into the waters off Ayungin Shoal.

Ayungin Shoal is located within the West Philippine Sea, which is being claimed by China to be part of its territory.

That was the reason why CCG troops fired water cannon on the resupply ship, leaving it "severely damaged." The Chinese Embassy in Manila earlier justified the attack as part of its "regulatory actions."

“Despite repeated warnings and routeing control by the Chinese side, the Filipino resupply ship tried to forcefully intrude into the adjacent waters of Ren’ai Jiao,” Yu claimed.

The Philippine government has repeatedly stated in the past that it has all the rights to conduct legal operations in the West Philippine Sea as it is part of the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which China also ratified.

"The China Coast Guard implemented lawful regulation, interception, and expulsion in a reasonable and professional manner,” Yu added.

Yu then warned the Philippines not to play with fire as it is “an invitation of disgrace.”

“China Coast Guard is ready at all times to defend the country's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” he added.
