Marcos: Gov't to make sure Teves will return to PH to face charges

President Marcos has assured Filipinos that the government will do everything to bring former congressman Arnolfo "Arnie" Teves Jr. back to the Philippines so he can face the charges against him.

Marcos said this after local authorities in Timor-Leste arrested Teves, the alleged mastermind in the killing of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo last year, in Dili supposedly while playing golf on Thursday, March 21.

In an X post on Friday, March 22, the President said justice will prevail in Teves' case.

"Rest assured that the government will take all necessary actions to bring him back to the country so he can face the charges filed against him," he said.

"I assure the Filipino people that we will spare no effort in ensuring that justice will prevail in this case," he added.

Marcos commended the collaborative efforts of the country's law enforcement agencies and international partners in the successful arrest.

"I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those involved in this operation for their unwavering dedication to upholding peace and order," he said.

Teves, who has been out of the country since February last year, is being linked to the murder of Degamo in March 2023, a claim that he had repeatedly denied.

Since then, Teves has refused to return to the country, claiming that his life would be in danger. The House of Representatives suspended him twice for disorderly behavior until he was expelled from the chamber in August 2023, the same month he was declared a terrorist by the Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC).

In a meeting with Timor-Leste Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak on the sidelines of the 42nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, President Marcos said he was informed that Teves applied for political asylum in Timor-Leste but the country rejected the application.

He then urged Teves to come home, an advice the embattled politician refused to heed.
