The House of Representatives is still technically at work during the five-week Lenten break.
This, after the House leadership permitted all standing and special committees to conduct hearings during the recess, which will run from March 21 to April 28.
It was Deputy Majority Leader Isabela 6th district Rep. Faustino “Inno” Dy who made a motion for the continuation of committee proceedings throughout the break during plenary session Wednesday night, March 20.
“I move to authorize all committees to conduct meetings and/or public hearings, if deemed necessary," Dy said.
The motion was swiftly carried by Deputy Speaker TUCP Party-list Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza after hearing no objections from the floor.
The House leadership says the decision to allow the conduct of committee hearings during the break highlights the chamber’s commitment to prioritizing legislative responsibilities and addressing pressing issues facing the nation.

"It reflects a proactive approach to governance, ensuring that important legislation is not delayed due to scheduled recess periods," it said.
Speaker Martin Romualdez, the leader of the 300-plus strong chamber, underscored the importance of maintaining momentum in their legislative efforts.
“The House remains steadfast in its commitment to serve the Filipino people. Allowing committee hearings during the break demonstrates our dedication to fulfilling our duties as legislators and addressing the needs of our constituents,” he said.
It was only last Tuesday, March 19 when Romualdez reported to President Marcos the 100 percent House approval of the 19 Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) priority bills slated for June 2024 passage.
This means that the House passed the bills three months ahead of schedule.
