Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte assured stakeholders that the quality of learning in public schools will not be affected by the gradual return to the old school calendar.

In the pilot episode of the radio program “Usapang Tol” via DWIZ, the Vice President said that there were “extensive consultations” before the shortened break for the current school year was announced.
“Pero iyong school calendar hindi naman makakaapekto sa mga kailangan gawin ng Department of Education para mayroong catch-up iyong ating mga kabataan, iyong ating mga learners sa kailangan nilang matutuhan sa mga paaralan (But the school calendar will not affect what the Department of Education needs to do so our youth, our learners will still have a catch-up with what they need to learn from the school),” she explained.
Duterte said further that even though the number of school days was also shortened because students won’t have a two-month break before the start of School Year 2024-2025, the difference is just minimal.
“Kaya din po gradual iyong shift natin sa school calendar at hindi natin biglang binalik agad na magtapos ang mga bata sa March dahil iyon ang isang consideration (That’s one consideration why our shift in the school calendar is gradual and we didn’t force for the students to finish by March),” the official stressed.
“Makaapekto iyon sa kailangan pag-aralan, iyong learning competency ng mga mag-aaral (That will affect the studies, the learning competency of the learners),” she added.
DepEd made the pronouncement for the current school calendar through Department Order No. 003 S. of 2024, which declared May 31, 2024 as the new adjusted end date of the current SY 2023-2024.
That start of SY 2024-2025 was also set on Monday, July 29, and the end will be on Friday, May 16, 2025.
Originally, the end of SY 2023-2024 was set for June 14 but with the adjusted school calendar, students would be on break from June 1 to July 26, 2024.
DepEd expects that based on the current adjustments made on the school calendar, it would take until SY 2027-2028 for the school year to be completed by around March.
The opening of classes for SY 2028-2029 may be set on June 5, 2028.
