Bong Quinto came through with the timely hits in overtime as Meralco outlasted Rain or Shine, 121-117, to pick up its first win in the 2024 Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, March 2.

The 6-foot-2 wingman sparked a pivotal 13-4 run to open the extra period before Allein Maliksi and Anjo Caram proved to be steady in the foul line as the Bolts bounced back after opening the conference on the wrong foot.
Quinto was one of four Meralco players to finish with 16 points – none bigger than the seven-straight he unloaded in the early goings of the overtime period that gave the Bolts enough cushion to weather repeated fightbacks from the Elasto Painters.
Maliksi, whose free throws and layup inside the final minutes sealed the win for Meralco, led the way with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Chris Newsome finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the final frame.
Cliff Hodge chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds while Norbert Torres, who nailed a crucial triple late in regulation, wound up with 16 as well. Anjo Caram also stepped up when Newsome exited the contest to also finish in double-figures with 13.
The Bolts actually led by as many as 14 points in regulation but just couldn’t hang on to the lead in the final frame as the Elasto Painters banked on the stellar showing from Santi Santillan and rookie Adrian Nocum. Rain or Shine even took a 102-101 lead with a little over a minute left in the fourth quarter.
Quinto had the chance to give the lead back to Meralco but split his charities as the Bolts leaned on their defense to keep the Elasto Painters from scoring in their final possession.
For the second-straight game, Nocum and Santillan paced Rain or Shine with the former recording a career-high 29 points, five rebounds and four steals while Santillan added 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Gian Mamuyac had 15 points while Keith Datu, Beau Belga and Jhonard Clarito had nine apiece.
Their efforts, just like in their first game loss, went futile in the end as Rain or Shine failed to execute when it mattered the most.
