'Nasa huli ang pagsisisi': Over 7,200 vehicles with expired registration apprehended, impounded
A total of 7,252 motor vehicles with expired registation were apprehended last month as the Land Transportation Office (LTO) continues its aggressive implementation of “No Registration, No Travel” policy across the country.
LTO chief Asst. Sec. Vigor D. Mendoza II reiterated its call to delinquent motor vehicles to renew the registration of their vehicles to avoid fines of up to P10,000 and the possibility of their vehicles being impounded.
In fact, he said a total of 1,653 motor vehicles that were apprehended in February this year for having expired licenses were impounded.
“We would like to appeal again to motor vehicles to renew the registration of their vehicles because you will shell out more money if you are apprehended. Our operation will continue to be aggressive in the coming days,” said Mendoza.
He said the renewal of vehicle registration is one of the ways to determine the roadworthiness of the vehicles.
More than 24 million motor vehicles in the country have expired registration, which prompted the LTO to implement the "No Registration, No Travel" policy in November last year.
Thousands of motor vehicles were apprehended since December last year as the Philippine National Police and enforcers of local government units joined the operations.
The LTO has designated special lanes for motor vehicle registration renewal to encourage owners to renew.
The official said the aggressive crackdown on delinquent motor vehicles comes with an intensified campaign against colorum vehicles.
Citing reports from the LTO Regional Offices, Mendoza said a total of 243 motor vehicles were apprehended as they were caught engaging in picking up passengers without the necessary permits from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
Of the figure, a total of 123 of them were impounded.
“Let this serve as a stern warning to both the delinquent motor vehicle owners that we will continue with this operation because this involves road safety and your obligation that comes with motor vehicle ownership,” said Mendoza.
“The same warning goes to operators and drivers of colorum vehicles. We have already filed charges against those apprehended and we will not stop until such time that you are held accountable for your illegal activities,” he added.
