The 40-year-old multiple Southeast Asian Games champion edged Japanese Naoyuki Oi, 4-1, 3-4, 4-2, 4-1, to become the first male Filipino to rule the $250,000 tournament.

It was another accolade for Biado after having won the 2022 WPA World Mixed Teams 10-Ball Championship with Johann Chua and Rubilen Amit, the 2021 US Open 9-Ball title, and the 2017 WPA World 9-Ball Championship.

He came close to winning the same title in the 2015 edition but lost to Chinese Taipei’s Ko Pin-yi in the finals.

But Biado was a different beast this time, holding his composure in pivotal moments and making his move at the right time.

He actually toppled Ko in the quarterfinals, 4-1, 0-4, 4-1, 3-4, 4-1, and then outhustled Russian-born American and last year’s semifinalist Fedor Gorst, 1-4, 4-3, 4-2, 4-2, to make it to the final round.

Biado, who captured the 2nd Chinese Taipei 9-Ball title last January, opened his campaign with victories over Australian Justin Sajich, former world champion American Shane Van Boening and Taiwanese Lin Wu Kun to barge into the knockout stage.

He outlasted Taiwanese Jung-Lin Chang in the Last 16.
