Blackwater proved that its opening game was no fluke.
The Bossing caught another big fish, this time taking down the TNT Tropang Giga, 87-76, to go 2-0 in the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, March 2.

Blackwater even bucked the absence of last game’s best player in Rey Nambatac, who went down with an injury, as Troy Rosario and RK Ilagan conspired in massive middle quarter runs for the Bossing to already eclipse their wins in the last conference.
Rosario was a thorn to the side of his former team, unloading 20 points apart from six boards while Ilagan stepped up big for Nambatac with an all-around effort of 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
The two were also the catalyst of a back-breaking 13-0 blast that allowed Blackwater to establish a huge 20-point advantage that withstood repeated rallies from TNT in the final frame.
The Bossing also got solid contributions from their rookies as Christian David added 13 points while James Kwekuteye and big man Bradwyn Quinto chipped in nine markers apiece.
Suffering a 10-game losing streak last conference after winning in their opening game, head coach Jeff Cariaso was just glad to finally get over the hump and see his wards figure out how to play as a team.
“Tonight was really a team effort. I don’t use that loosely because it’s really a necessity when you play a big team like TNT, Meralco and the San Miguel team,” said Cariaso.
“We have a young team. We are still getting to know each other and you have to figure out how to win games while you are figuring out your team. So I’m very happy right now with the way the guys are playing,” he added.
It was actually a back-and-forth affair in the opening quarter before the Bossing got some head start in the second frame where it managed to outscore the Tropang Giga, 23-18 to take a 39-35 advantage at the break.
Blackwater, though, surprisingly kept TNT at bay in the third frame before Rosario, Quinto and Ilagan took turns in the pivotal run with the latter capping the rally with a booming triple to turn a 73-65 advantage to an 85-65 lead with only four minutes left in the contest.
