Washington has granted Manila an additional raw sugar allocation that may enter the United States, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced.
In a statement, the USTR said it granted the Philippines 25,300 metric tons of additional sugar exports under the World Trade Organization (WTO) tariff-rate quota for fiscal year 2024.
Manila's additional sugar quota is part of the USTR's additional quantity of 125,000 metric tons raw value (MTRV) on top of the 1,117,196 it had previously committed to.
This fresh allocation is in addition to the 145,235 MTRV in-quota allocation that the USTR had previously announced for the Philippines for this year.
The Philippines' last shipment to the US was in the crop year 2020-2021 when it shipped 112,008 metric tons commercial weight of raw sugar.
TRQs allow countries to export specified quantities of a product to the United States at a relatively low tariff but subject all imports of the product above a predetermined threshold to a higher tariff.
