House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo 1st District Rep. Janette Garin advised the Department of Education (DepEd) to “look deeply” into the viral TikTok video of the angry teacher to confirm whether or not it was an isolated incident.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, March 19, Garin noted that there could be a bigger problem at play in the case.
“We also have to look at the bigger picture, baka yung ating mga public school teachers ay mayroon ding pinagdaraanan and wala don yung avenue (maybe our public school teachers are going through something and the avenue is not there),” the lawmaker said.
“It’s a very big institution and there should be a command or a chain where they can vent out their problems,” she explained.
In a viral video on TikTok, a public school teacher was seen scolding her students using foul language.
Netizens were alarmed by such action and criticized the teacher for berating the students and publicizing an unprofessional conduct.
Garin, a former Department of Health (DOH) secretary, said that there should be a feedback mechanism in the school system to better respond to the mental health needs of teachers.
“Is somebody hearing them out? Is somebody hearing their problems? Or is somebody supporting them?” she emphasized.
The congresswoman urged the DepEd to employ such mechanism to give teachers the platform to voice out their concerns.
Garin also noted that the livestreaming of the teacher's outburst was probably "intentional” and not “by accident”.
“There is a deeper message behind that. It’s venting out. Nandoon yung baka mamaya hindi niya na alam kung ano ang gagawin (Maybe she didn’t know what to do anymore,” she said.
“Kasi minsan yung mga tao (Because sometimes the person) they want it to be viral because they need the attention. Or they want it to be viral because nobody is paying attention to them,” the solon stressed.
Garin noted that if the public school teacher in the viral video was stressed out by her teaching duties, then DepEd may transfer her to administrative tasks for the time being.
