Juliana Gomez brilliantly defended her epee individual crown in the UAAP Women’s Fencing last Friday, March 15, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila.

The daughter of 2005 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Richard Gomez and Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres proved to be a cut above the rest with a repeat title against De La Salle’s Cyrra Vergara in a come-from-behind 15-14 win.
“I feel like I just hit a bull's eye because the target was the gold, but I was able to add to what Nana Carbonell did during the first day. It was honestly such a great feeling that we have a good chance of winning the overall for the women's," said the back-to-back champion Gomez.
The 23-year-old Gomez, who was fairly new to the sporting scene as she only competitively got serious at 19, had all the support she needed from her parents.
Interestingly, his father was not only a national team athlete but also currently serves as the president of the Philippine Fencing Association.
Last year, Gomez reportedly revealed that she is looking to qualify for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, two decades after his father’s success in the men’s event for the national team.
The qualifying tournament is set to begin this year for the biennial meet’s 33rd edition.
Meanwhile, a bronze from Angela Dayro in the sabre individual put the Fighting Maroons still in the driver's seat after the individual events, adding to the one gold and one bronze that UP bagged the previous day.
