The Red Lions whipped Keanzel Basketball, 109-59, while the Green Archers clobbered Go Torakku-St. Clare, 90-63, to share the early lead in the six-team tournament with identical 2-0 records.
NCAA Finals MVP James Payosing led the assault for Marinerong Pilipino after putting up an uber-efficient outing of 18 points in just 13 minutes of play.
All of the 15 players under head coach Yuri Escueta contributed to the Red Lions’ cause as they built a huge 62-39 advantage at the break and never looked back since then.
The Green Archers, on the other hand, bucked a slow start but got their engines going with a back-breaking 19-3 rally that allowed them to take a 26-11 advantage.
That was all the defending champions needed to break the game wide open as Jonnel Policarpio sustained his fine play with 17 points and nine rebounds. CJ Austria provided support with 15 points while Mike Phillips collected 12 points, 16 rebounds plus three assists and two steals.
Both wins are fitting follow-up to the two teams' blowout victories that kickstarted their respective bids to reach the finals for the second-straight season.
Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda hardly broke a sweat once again on the heels of a 92-59 win against Go Torakku-St. Clare in last week’s opener while EcoOil-La Salle trounced CCI-Yengskivel with a 110-68 win.
