'Preserve these treasures': Tagbilaran bishop calls for protection of Bohol's natural wonders
Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy called on the faithful to protect Bohol's Chocolate Hills after a resort was built in the protected area.

“We should strive to appreciate and preserve these treasures that make our province truly special,” Uy said in a statement issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Thursday, March 14.
The 57-year-old bishop said it is important for Boholanos to “recognize and cherish” the city's landmarks including its beaches, centuries-old churches, and “myriad of other natural wonders.”
He also urged the faithful to take “proactive” steps in safeguarding the environment.
The bishop even suggested things for conservation efforts, using resources wisely, and pushing for laws that put the environment first.
“Together, we can make a meaningful impact and ensure a harmonious coexistence with nature,” Uy added.
It was on March 13 when a video went viral of the Captain’s Peak Resort, built within the protected zone of the Chocolate Hills.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said that since last year, it has taken a series of actions to prevent its operation.
“In the case of the Captain’s Peak Resort, the DENR issued a Temporary Closure Order last September 6, 2023, and a Notice of Violation to the project proponent last January 22, 2024 for operating without an ECC,” it said.
