Baguio logs fewer rape cases from January 1 to March 4

BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio City Police Office has reported that there was a significant drop in the number of rape cases here from January 1 to March 4 compared to the same period last year.

Police Lt. Col. Domingo Gambican, BCPO Deputy City Director for Operations, said only three cases were recorded from January 1 to March 4, down seven or 70 percent from the 10 in 2023. Two victims were of legal age and one was a minor.

"Most of the rape cases happened in residential areas and most of the suspects were those who worked until late at night but were not under the influence of alcoholic beverages before committing the crime," Gambican said.

The decrease in rape cases was due to the cooperation among the BCPO, City Social Welfare and Development Office, and City Health Services.

The number of rape cases here went up and down in the past five years. This city logged 68 rape cases in 2019, decreased to 45 in 2020, increased to 64 in 2021, dropped to 44, and more than 20 last year.

Gambican said the BCPO, together with the CSWDO and CHSO, has conducted an information drive against child abuse and rape in barangays and schools. Stakeholders conducted lecture programs in schools and shared information and educational campaign materials.

Police handle the investigation of cases while CSWDO provides psycho-social support to rape victims, including their families. The CHSO leads the national program Health and Home, Education, Drugs and Depression, Suicide, and Safety (HEADS).

Training and capacity building of 100 HEADS counselors from schools, BCPO, HSO, CSWDO, and possible implementation by civic-social organizations have also been initiated.
