Zubiri keen on Senate panel's issuance first of show cause order to Quiboloy

Citing a ruling by the Supreme Court (SC), Senate President Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri said that he will speak with Sen. Risa Hontiveros regarding the issuance of a show cause order to Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Apollo Quiboloy.

In an interview on Tuesday, March 12, Zubiri said that this must be done before the Senate releases a warrant of arrest.

"Kakausapin ko muna si Senator Risa, kasi naglabas na ng ruling yung Supreme Court sa Pharmally (I will talk first to Senator Risa because the SC released a ruling on Pharmally). Remember the Pharmally issue about the indirect contempt? So under the ruling of the Supreme Court, we must exhaust all legal avenues, in other words, due process," he said.

"So ang (my) request ko kay Sen. Risa, all she has to do is come up with another committee hearing really quickly, maybe today, maybe tomorrow, or Monday, to give a show cause order," he added.

Zubiri said that he does not want to violate the SC ruling on the Pharmally issue.

"So pag nag-show cause order si ma'am Risa at hindi pa rin satisfactory yung explanation, sagot, at ayaw talaga pumunta dito (So if ma'am Risa issues a show cause order and the explanation is still unsatisfactory, and he still does not want to appear here), then it is ministerial on the part of the Senate to release warrant of arrest," he added.

It can be recalled that in November 2023, the SC nullified the arrest and contempt orders that the Senate issued against Pharmally executive Linconn Ong and former presidential adviser Michael Yang.

The SC said that witnesses charged by Congress with giving false or evasive testimony must be given a chance to explain why his or her testimony is not false or evasive.

Meanwhile, Sen. Nancy Binay, vice chair of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality, said in a separate interview that she did not join the objection against Quiboloy's contempt order.

She said that it's unacceptable that a person invited by the Senate is not being required to appear. If ever the move to overturn the contempt order was pushed, Binay said that it could have been the first time that it happened.

Sen. Robinhood Padilla has remained firm on blocking Quiboloy's contempt order, claiming in an interview over the weekend that the Filipino people are indebted to Quiboloy, which is the reason why he opposed his senator-colleagues' contempt order.

However, he is still four signatures short of fulfilling his objection to the contempt order against the church leader, who is facing allegations of human trafficking, sexual abuse, and forced labor. The seven-day period for him to complete it is set to end on Tuesday.

Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito backed out from the original five members of the Senate panel who sought to block the panel's contempt ruling. The others are Senators Cynthia Villar, Christopher "Bong" Go, Imee Marcos, and Padilla.

Hontiveros cited in contempt and requested the arrest of Quiboloy after skipping the latest hearing on the investigation of the human trafficking, sexual abuses, and forced labor allegations hurled against him.
