Navy to receive brand-new corvette from South Korea in 2025

The Philippine Navy (PN) will receive the first of its two brand-new corvettes from South Korea in 2025.
PN spokesperson Commander John Percie Alcos said the corvette will be coming in during the second semester next year. Meanwhile, the second one will be delivered in 2026.
“Six months ago, the Philippine Navy has been preparing for that already. We’ve been training people, we’ve been organizing them and to include the procurement of necessary equipment for them to perform effectively when the new acquisitions arrive,” Alcos said in a press conference at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City on Tuesday, March 12.
The Navy personnel who will be manning the corvette will depart for an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) training in South Korea next year.
“But warfare-wise, warfighting-wise they are already undergoing training,” Alcos confirmed.
The Department of National Defense procured two brand new corvettes from South Korean firm HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in 2021 as part of the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Corvettes can perform anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare operations. They can operate independently or work together with other modern warships within a Surface Action Group.
The contract for the project costs P28 billion and the vessels are being built at HD HHI’s shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.
The steel-cutting and keel-laying ceremony for the first corvette took place in Ulsan in November 2023, marking the start of the construction of the ship and the building of the ship's backbone respectively.
Once the construction is completed, the ships will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons, sensors and systems that can address various maritime security situations.
