This modern bahay kubo blends Filipino design with Scandinavian decor

If your dream is to live a simple life in the rural area, this vacation home is just for you

Some people dream of living in a high-rise condominium with city skylights, a rooftop infinity pool, and perhaps a jacuzzi. Others prefer a more rural setting in farmlands, enjoying a tranquil view of the sunset while sipping coffee with loved ones. That dream turned into reality for the couple, Artem and Jane Kotova.

Unwind Hata PH, the vacation home crafted by the couple in San Juan, Batangas, got its name inspired by the traditional Ukrainian housing called "hata." Described as a "modern bahay kubo," this two-storey home exudes an old-world charm with contemporary interiors. Situated on a 1,000 sq.m lot, its decor has been lauded by guests for its Scandinavian-inspired approach.

The first floor of the property is constructed with concrete. Here, guests can find an open kitchen and dining area, along with a toilet and bath. In contrast, the second floor is crafted from bamboo and adorned with large windows, reminiscent of the traditional bahay kubo.

The interior utilizes hardiflex to achieve a modern aesthetic. This level includes a balcony and one bedroom with a queen-size bed and sofa. A seat by the window is also available for guests to appreciate the lovely view of the outdoors.

The concept for this vacation home dates back to 2020. Originally intended to be built in Ukraine, unforeseen circumstances altered the owners’ plans. Returning to the Philippines, the couple faced the challenge of adapting their dream home concept to the new setting. Embracing the Filipino culture, food, and traditions, Artem and Jane were inspired to create a home reminiscent of a bahay kubo.

“When we repatriated, we started thinking, why don't we transfer this idea and implement it in the Philippines, which also has beautiful landscapes and lovely places. We started discovering because we are new in that business; it's a new thing for us. But we are still trying. We have had this idea for so many years, and it sticks with us. So that's where the journey began,” shared Artem.

Construction of the project commenced in January 2022. Despite facing challenges, the couple persisted and showed that dreams are not just wishes but can become a reality. They started accepting guests mid-December just last year.

For future plans for the home, the couple is considering adding another living space to accommodate more guests. They are also thinking about the addition of a pool and incorporating more plants to enhance the ambiance of the place.
