DFA: Philippines takes care of Pinoys abroad, regardless of gender
The Philippine government "takes care" of all Filipinos abroad, regardless of their gender identity, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega said.

De Vega made the statement in a Palace briefing on Tuesday, March 12, where he mentioned a recent issue involving Filipino transgender women in Bangkok, Thailand.
"So, all’s well that ends well," he said, referring to the riot involving the Filipino nationals and Thai transwomen.
"That was of course an interesting topic but we are friends and the Filipino government takes care of all our nationals abroad whatever their gender identity is," he added.
De Vega cited the issue as he announced that his office will be renamed from Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs to Office of the Undersecretary for Migration Affairs.
It provides a distinction of his office's role, he said, which actually covers all migrant Filipinos. His office's function includes providing assistance to all Filipinos abroad, not just migrant workers, De Vega explained.
Three of the Filipino transgender women who were arrested by authorities in Bangkok returned to Manila last Friday, March 8.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok have assisted them, including the settlement of the fines imposed upon them by the Thai court up to their flight back to Manila.
