Classes suspended in Bacolod due to extreme heat

BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez suspended classes on the elementary and secondary levels here for two days due to extreme heat.

Benitez said that face-to-face classes in public and private schools and universities are cancelled on March 11 and 12 in response to the forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) that this city will have a high heat index reaching 40 to 41 degrees Celsius.

Elementary and secondary levels were encouraged to adopt alternative delivery modes as methods of instruction for their students, Benitez said.

Benitez said the decision for the tertiary level is at the discretion of their college or university administrators.

In a press briefing on Monday, March 11, Benitez said that the suspension of classes is a precautionary measure to protect students and was in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd).

On March 8, Benitez suspended classes on all levels in public and private schools and universities here due to a high heat index of 40 degrees forecast by PAGASA.

This decision prioritizes the safety of our students and educators, according to Benitez.
