Congressmen from the majority and minority did not find former president Rodrigo Duterte's new role as steward of the assets and properties of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) church leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy a big deal.
According to Assistant Minority Leader 1-RIDER Party-list Rep. Rodge Gutierrez, Duterte is now a private citizen and can do whatever he pleases.
“Of course, there’s very little prohibitions to a former president. As a private person [he is] free to take on any role that may be offered to him,” Gutierrez, a lawyer, said during a press conference Monday, March 11.
“Iyong question po (As for the question), if there’s any implications, I would say wala naman po siguro (I would say there are none).
"At least on our part here [in the] House, tuloy naman po iyong inquiry (the inquiry will push through) and we don’t see any effect from that which remains to be seen. We don’t know in what manner an administrator will be participating pero tuloy pa rin po iyong ating inquiry (the inquiry will push through)," he said.
Rodriguez was referring to the scheduled hearing Tuesday, March 12 of the House Committee on Legislative Franchises on the franchise of controversial television network SMNI. Quiboloy is widely known as the founder of the network, the official name of which is Swara Sug.
The House panel had issued a subpoena against Quiboloy, but his camp has already said that he wasn't going to attend the hearing. The church leader is allegedly in hiding.
Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David "Jay-jay" Suarez acknowledged in the same press conference that Quiboloy had the right to appoint the former president as administrator of his assets.
“Naniniwala po ako na bilang dating pangulo siya po ay magsisilbing daan upang siguraduhin na kung anuman po ang mga legal processes na kakailanganin natin upang malaman ang mga questions of law that is now being faced by [KOJC], Swara Sug and all the other assets that would be available to the committee,” Suarez noted.
(I believe that as a former president, he will serve as a way to ensure that whatever legal processes that we would need in order to know the questions of law that is now being faced by [KOJC], Swara Sug and all the other assets that would be available to the committee.)
Like Gutierrez, Suarez downplayed any significant implications of the appointment, and instead emphasized the need for due process and adherence to legal procedures in addressing pertinent issues concerning the assets in question.
“Ang hinahabol naman po natin talaga dito ay iyong katotohanan, ang hinahabol naman po talaga natin dito ay iyong karapatan, at sisiguraduhin po natin na ito po ay dadaan sa maayos at tamang proseso dito po sa Kongreso,” stressed the deputy speaker.
(What we're really after here is the truth, what we're really after are the rights, and we will ensure that it will go through the proper and correct process in Congress.)
Quiboloy is the "spiritual adviser" of Duterte.
