ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo intends to grill the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and its Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) over the landslides in Davao de Oro once the House of Representatives begins its probe on the tragedy.
This was bared the House deputy majority leader for communications during a recent press conference wherein he blasted the two agencies for supposedly "doing nothing" despite the landslide happening back in February.
“February ho ito nangyari before Valentine’s. Ngayon ho ay 98 na ang patay sa Maco, Davao De Oro, tapos meron pa pong eight missing. So, mag-iisandaan na ito. Wala hong ginawa ang DENR, wala ring pong ginawa, wala kang narinig sa MGB. So ibig sabihin, may problema ho rito,” Tulfo said.
(This happened February before Valentine’s Day. Now, 98 have died in Maco, Davao de Oro, and there are still eight missing. So we're going to reach a hundred. The DENR did nothing, and the MGB said nothing and did nothing either. So that means we have a problem here.)
Tulfo frowned over the slow response of the national government in addressing the many problems that arose from the landslide, which resulted from the heavy rains that the Davao region experienced earlier this year.
The House Committee on Disaster Resilience chaired by Dinagat Island Rep. Alan Ecleo is set to conduct an investigation in aid of legislation into the deadly landslides.
The Feb. 6 landslide affected four barangays, burying several houses, a barangay hall, and a terminal of a bus company.
Tulfo said that since 2008, the areas affected by the landslide in Maco have been declared a “no-build zone.”
“Ibig sabihin, wala na dapat istruktura dyan. Wag ka na magpatayo. Kung meron man dyan, paalisin mo mga tao. Eh di ngayon 98 ang patay. Anong gagawin natin? Kakalimutan natin? Ibabaon natin sa limot?” asked the neophyte congressman.
(That means that there shouldn't be any structures there. Don't let people build them. If there are existing ones, evict them. But now we have 98 dead. What will we do? We'll just forget it?)
“Yun ang problema kaya nag-file kami ng resolusyon para maimbestigahan ito (That is the problem and we filed a resolution so we may investigate it)," he added.
