Bed bugs may be tiny insects, but if their presence at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) grabs headlines, they turn into a big issue.
Realizing this, House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs Chairman Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo advised transportation authorities not to take lightly the bed bugs incident at NAIA, which is the country's main gateway.
Salo said on Friday, March 1 that immediate action is needed to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, particularly overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and balikbayans (returnees).
"Hindi dapat balewalain ng mga awtoridad ang pagkakaroon ng surot sa NAIA (Authorities shouldn't ignore the presence of bed bugs at NAIA)," the veteran congressman said.
"I call upon NAIA management, in collaboration with the operators, to take immediate and decisive action to address this matter and restore confidence in the airport's cleanliness and hygiene standards," he said.
Salo further urged passengers to remain vigilant and report any instances of pest infestations or cleanliness concerns promptly.
Meanwhile, the Kabayan solon considers DOTr’s recent announcement of San Miguel Corp.’s (SMC) winning the P170.6-billion contract to operate, maintain, and upgrade NAIA, as an opportunity to enhance NAIA’s facilities and operations.
“We trust that the envisioned NAIA upgrade will be undertaken soonest to finally and permanently address such concerns,” Salo concluded.
